Beginners do not despair, as there is an area located just for those learning to make carved turns. Originally known as Treasure Mountains Resort, Park City Mountain Resort has been operating since 1963. The last surviving mining company in Park City turned to skiing with help from a federal loan to revive the economically depressed area. The mining company built a gondola, base and summit lodges, chairlifts and a nine-hole golf course.

In 1965 skiers would hop aboard the Skier’s Subway, a modified mining trolley that traveled two and a half miles through the pitch black Spiro Tunnel to Thayne’s Hoist. Then skiers would board the mine elevator and be lifted 1,750 feet to the surface.
