Just returned from Kronplatz (Feb 24). A really nice, well kept resort. Long, wide and varied slopes, a decent number of cafes/huts providing good value food & drink. Excellent piste signage and well placed elevation markers and clocks. San Vigilio, where we stayed, has an upmarket feel with lots of quality hotels. Not a party place, which suited us.
Fast and modern lift system, well cared for piste
Lift ticket a bit pricey
A group of 8 of us (beginner-intermediate adults) went to Kronplatz (basing ourselves in Olang) for 4 nights. Kronplatz itself is a dome shaped mountain with runs down 3 different sides of the mountain. The runs were nice and long with short queue time at the bottom. We found the gondola/chair system to be highly advanced, which made us feel both comfortable and very safe using it. Kronplatz is also linked to the Dolomiti Superski area so you can always hop to other pistes should you feel the need. We chose this resort because it looked like local resort for mainly europeans. The villages are not heavily developed so there is not much night life, which suited us better. You can probably get by with just speaking English, although most people speak primarily German or Italian. We found the people to be very friendly. The ski school we tried (Cima) was excellent and our ski instructor (Heinze) spoke excellent English. By the end of the 4th day, our total beginner in the party was going down blue/red runs and paralleling. We found Kronplatz to offer excellent skiing over a wide variety of runs. Because the runs were spread over such a wide expanse thre was minimal congestation and great possiblities for planning an exciting route. This is an excellent area for families or friends who prefer a quieter evening than late nights.
Modern facilities. Long wide runs. Linked to other areas.
Not for party animals.
