As North America’s first day of winter draws within reach and holiday travel plans begin to crystalize, all eyes turn to the storm track blowing out of the Pacific. Inevitably, while some regions of the country will welcome in one storm after the next, others will remain high and dry into the start of 2018.

Choosing the right ski destination with the best snow conditions tops any skier’s list of holiday travel planning priorities. From Lake Tahoe to Vermont, picking a winning resort in December’s powder lottery can mean the difference between exploring endless acres of open terrain and begrudgingly lapping a single groomer above the parking lot.

Looking back at the snowfall totals from December 2016, more than 50 resorts across North America saw over 75 inches for the month, with 22 resorts totaling more than 100 inches. These numbers made for some excellent conditions and a healthy base for vacationing skiers and riders. As an added bonus, over 100 resorts scored a white Christmas in December 2016, with some resorts reaping up to two feet or more in just 24 hours.

Regionally, the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia and the northern Rockies won out with the most triple digit snow totals from last December, with one resort amassing a staggering 321 inches during the 31-day stretch. Other notable regions that saw impressive holiday snow totals included Vermont, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming.

Check out December 2016’s top 100 snowfall totals across North America, as well as the top snowfall totals from Christmas Day, and see if your holiday travel plans are on target.
