Some 1000 participants will race down 2150 metres of vertical in La Grave for the 21st edition of the Derby de la Meije April 1-3, 2009.
The La Meije Derby brings together the most extreme skiers and riders in Europe and takes place in the grandiose setting of La Meije-La Grave. Participants will compete for a share of the €10,000 prize winning money. The race begins at Dome de la Lauze at 3550 metres and the aim is to reach the finish line as quickly as possible on skis, snowboard, monoski, telemarks, snowscooter, snowskates, sledges, or any other device.
Ten racers from all disciplines set off together every minute. Each team consists of three people including at least one woman. Each racer will also be registered individually in his/her respective category. The team's time is calculated by adding up the individual time of each racer. One of the quirky traditions to this event is that many racers wear fancy dress.
La Grave has some of the world's most famous off-piste areas. The resort is no place for beginners - there are no groomed runs, no show cannons, no ski patrols, just plenty of wild off-piste with 2150 metres of gruelling descent.
