Holiday skiing this winter is at its best in the West. Snowstorms raged across the West delivering the goods for skiers and snowboarders in the week before Christmas. From Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana to Mammoth Mountain in California, whoops resounded across the slopes as skiers plunged into powder.

In contrast to the bleakness of last winter, some ski resorts in the West have already surpassed last year’s snow totals. In Oregon, for instance, more than 236 inches of snow has fallen this year at Mt. Bachelor. That is more snow than the resort received for the whole season last winter.

Skier and snowboarders heading to the slopes for the holidays will find powder and packed powder in most places. But sometimes, too much of a good thing happens. Excessive snowfall skyrocketed avalanche conditions, and several passes, particularly in Washington State, closed temporarily. Before you head up skiing, check conditions and road reports.
