When the economy's rough and unpredictable, it's nice to know you can count at least one free thing to do in the winter. The Silverthorne Nordic Center at the Raven Golf Course and the North Pond Ice Rink bring you free Nordic skiing and ice skating for the seventh season in a row. Skaters and skiers must provide their own equipment and follow facility rules but otherwise you can have at it.
The Nordic Center offers several different levels of trails for beginners to advanced winter warriors (clearly marked with different colored signs). The North trail is a 4-kilometer intermediate level trail, while the South trail is 3.7-kilometers and groomed for beginners. The Nordic Center will be groomed and cleared as weather and time dictate by the Raven Golf Course Staff, approximately three times per week.
No dogs are allowed. The area is for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing only; no motorized vehicles, walking, or sledding. Parents or guardians must accompany those under 13 years of age
The two facilities operate through March or as long as snow conditions allow, from sunrise to sunset. You can also ice fish on North Pond, outside the skating area.
The Raven will host the Swift Skedaddle Snowshoe Adventure Sunday, Jan. 11. Participants may chose between a 10K race (a regional qualifier), a 3K romp or a 3K family activity. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10:30 a.m.
