Massanutten is in the midst of a snowmaking upgrade.
"We've added 25 to 30 acres of terrain over time that wasn't designed to be used with a pond the size of our original," said the Va. resort's Merrick Kacer. "Our snowmaking pond is about 16 million gallons, and we go through that three times a year."
He said the resort has 70 acres of skiable terrain and, in winters with favorable snowmaking conditions, is 100 percent open.
The work underway is intended to increase the water supply and pumping capacity from 4,000 gallons per minute (GPM) to more than 6,000 GPM.
"The permitting process is underway, and it's going to happen as soon as possible," he said.
