The purchase of Powder Ridge by Middlefield Holdings LLC could mark the end of several years of uncertainty for the ski area, which last operated during the winter of 2005-06.

The Conn. resort's future remains uncertain, however, as several more legal steps must occur before Middlefield Holdings take possession of the property.

Middlefield Holdings' plans also are uncertain.

The town of Middlefield and Robert Switzgable, owner of Ski Sundown, had hoped to buy Powder Ridge, reopen the ski area, and preserve surrounding land as open space.

Middlefield Holdings outbid them at an held auction June 21, 2008 after a long involuntary bankruptcy proceeding begun by unsecured creditors of Whitewater Mountain Resorts and principal owner Ken Leavitt.
