But don't forget Val d'Isere 2009 – the next Alpine Championships after Are. It may be only two months to the next World Alpine Championships in Are, Sweden and after that our minds may be on Whistler 2010 for the next Olympics, but don't forget Val d'Isere 2009 – the next Alpine Championships after Are. It's a big deal for this stunning and historic French resort in part because it will become one of less than a handful of resorts to have staged Olympic Games (Albertville '92), World Cup and World Championship events.
Work has started on a 6000 square metre sports centre at the foot of the Bellevarde Face. The complex will serve as the Organisation Centre during the World Championships and will then be transformed in to the Sports Centre the resort currently lacks, with two pools, spa, gym, climbing wall and more.
The slalom stadium will be built on the Bellevarde face rather than on Solaise as planned due to environmental concerns – a priority for this car-free event. The Women's speed events (Downhill, Combined and Super G) will however still be staged on the Solaise slopes which will not have hosted races for nearly 50 years (the last was in 1960).
