Visitors to OnTheSnow.com have singled out the downhill terrain at Wyoming's Jackson Hole Resort as their favorite in North America. The data period for voting was January 2011 when a Nielsen audit showed 3.4 million unique browsers logged in to the world's most visited Web platform. OnTheSnow.com is published by Mountain News Corp.
Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia continued to build on its legacy of hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics and received the top award as North America's Favorite Overall Resort.
Visitors also honored Park City Mountain Resort, Utah, as having their "Favorite Terrain Parks;" Winter Park, Colo., as their favorite "Family Friendly Terrain;" and Breckenridge, Colo., for offering their "Favorite Nightlife."
The ski resort with the top average score (on a scale of 1 to 5) in each category, and a minimum number of entries, receives the award. Visitors then ranked them in five categories: Overall Favorite, Best Nightlife, Most Family-Friendly, Best Downhill Terrain and Best Terrain Park.
"User-generated content is a very powerful and effective way Web visitors have to communicate with each other," said Mountain News Global Managing Director Chad Dyer. "Skiers and snowboarders are relying on the word of their peers when they make resort choices."
Dyer points out these rankings should not be used as comparisons of one resort to another, since all visitors to OnTheSnow.com have not visited every resort, and expectations of the ski experience vary greatly in regions throughout North America. "But, they do provide an accurate reflection of our visitors' experiences and their passion for particular resorts."
OnTheSnow visitors were enthusiastic about Jackson Hole's terrain. "Advanced and expert skiers will find everything they are looking for and more. Intermediate skiers will leave with a sense of accomplishment of having skied such an amazing mountain, and beginners will still have enough trails to keep them entertained," wrote one.
"Amazing terrain, abundant snow and steeps. The terrain is extremely varied so there is something for everyone. Jackson Hole provides everything from backcountry tree runs to steeps, chutes for the super adventurous and then open groomers and cruisers for the laid back. "If you are a good skier or boarder you must HIT this zone," wrote another. Still another said, "Jackson Hole has the best backcountry I've ever experienced. If you love hitting some powder and maybe a little woods skiing, check it out."
Skiers and riders enjoy Jackson's 2,500 acres of in-bound terrain and revel at the mountain's 4,139-foot vertical (the greatest continuous rise in the U.S.). There are two mountains: Apres Vous and Rendezvous and an open backcountry gate system giving skiers and free-heelers access to more than 3,000 additional acres of high-country terrain. There are 111 named trails and many other unnamed routes known to skiers who have skied here for years. Twelve lift systems serve the mountains.
