Cataloochee Resort in North Carolina is taking Learn A Snow Sport Month so seriously that it is offering free lessons for the rest of the season. Just rent equipment from the resort and the lesson is free. Lessons start on the hour from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday - Thursday. Lift tickets must be purchased separately.
Homeschoolers get a break on lesson packages on Tuesdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost for children age seven and older is $25 for skis, lift ticket, and beginner lesson. The snowboard package costs $35. Homeschoolers seven years and older can try the Cat Tracker package priced at $60 for a half day for rentals and lifts and rentals. Lessons are held 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. Children can ski or ride the rest of the day with their parents after the lesson.
Instruction concentrates on equipment handling, ski area safety, and basic on-snow skills such as walking, gliding, stopping, and turning.
Cataloochee offers another price break for children up to age 17 with its Kids Ski Free program good at participating accommodations in Maggie Valley. Lodging runs Sunday - Thursday. Free skiing or riding is good Monday - Friday. Adults must pay the full lift ticket price to get a free children's ticket. There is a limit of two children to each paying adult.
