A geographic belt from Central New York across Southern Vermont received the jackpot from a series of storms that bashed the Northeast the last week of February.

Ground zero appeared to be Dover, Vt., home of Mount Snow. Condominium associations were calling members to urge them to stay away the weekend of Feb. 26-28 so snow plows could work unhampered.

That comes under the heading of "fat chance" for skiers and riders, even though many showed up to find unplowed driveways, and two-lane roads narrowed to a single car width.

Areas north and south of Dover received diminishing amounts of fresh snow, but still lots.

Everything is relative. Had Dover not received more than 5.5 feet of fresh snow from Tuesday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 28 the lesser amounts elsewhere would have seemed bountiful.

This winter has been marked by early and sustained snowmaking weather, and few large storms, but impressively brisk skier and rider traffic on the slopes.

Areas from New York State to Quebec's Eastern Townships benefited from the storms.

The sustained snowfall has set up the region for terrific conditions through March, when many of the premier events are scheduled, including the U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships at Stratton Mountain Resort in Vermont.
