Mount Hood: Five Ski Areas 50 Miles From Portland

Set 50 miles southeast of Portland, Mount Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon. All resorts are accessible from Highway 26 or I-84. This stratovolcano is home to 12 glaciers, 5 ski areas, and miles of terrain of skiable terrain.

Mount Hood's six ski areas are: Timberline Lodge, Mountain Hood Meadows, Mount Hood Ski Bowl, Cooper Spur, Snow Bunny and Summit.

On the south side of Mount Hood lies Timberline Lodge (5,960 feet). This National Historic Landmark dating back to the 1930s was also known as the Overlook Hotel in the movie The Shining and is now a popular ski accommodation. The ski area, also called Timberline Lodge, boasts the longest ski season in the U.S, open all year round, and is also home to the highest vertical in the Pacific Northwest – 3,690 feet.

Timberline Lodge's 41 trails and slopes are suitable for all levels and are served by 9 lifts, including 5 high-speed quads. Skiers can reach a maximum altitude of 8,540 feet. Snowboarders have multiple snowparks and a pipe in winter. Nordic skiing and snowshoeing are also popular.

Mount Hood Meadows (7,300 feet) is one of the largest ski resorts in Oregon. Its 85 slopes for all levels stretch out over 2,150 skiable acres and are linked by 11 chairlifts (including 6 high-speed quads). There are no accommodations at Mount Hood Meadows itself, but many nearby hotels offer shuttle services to the resort.

The Mount Hood Skibowl is the largest night ski area in the country. Its 69 runs for all levels reach a height of 5,100 feet and are linked by 9 modern lifts. Thirty-four runs are lit up for night skiing, and all lifts are lit. Night skiing is available here seven days a week. Lifts open 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM for night riding.

Set on the northeast side of Mount Hood, Cooper Spur has 10 slopes served by 4 lifts, including 1 double chairlift. Skiers can reach a height of 4,350 feet. There is also a tubing center and 6.5 kilometers of cross-country trails to explore. Set in an attractive forested area, Cooper Spur Mountain Resort features log cabins, condos, a restaurant and a hotel.

Built in 1927, the Summit Ski Area is the oldest ski area in the Pacific Northwest. It comprises a small ski park with downhill skiing, tubing and Nordic trails. The highest elevation is 4,300 feet with 300 feet of vertical. It has 3 trails and 70 skiable acres.
