Maine, the northernmost state in New England, may boast the most burly, rugged skiers and snowboarders in the entire region.

Southern Maine’s Sunday River is often one of the first ski areas to open for the season and boasts an impressive 743 skiable acres of terrain, yet Sugarloaf, farther north, is home to the most skiable terrain on the East Coast, thanks to its recent Brackett Basin expansion, at 1,153 skiable acres.

Maine is also home to resorts like Saddleback, and their Kennebago Steeps, the largest steep skiing and riding facility in the east; or Mt. Abram, who recently partnered with the Mountain Rider’s Alliance to create a model for sustainable, homegrown, local resorts.
