While it's not exactly Earth shattering and likely a pretty obvious observation, we were keenly aware of ski pant sizing this season (by the way, since when is the standard sample size a small?!?). Bottom line, when it comes to ski pants, fit is everything, if not, the only thing.
Whether you're lapping the lift line every weekend, on a multi-day AT excursion or taking a couple runs between base-area bar hopping, the fit not only enables or inhibits movement, but also how stylish or sloppy a skier looks while skiing, lift riding, touring, hiking and hoping. To hit on these important points, look for stretch fabric construction and movement-enhancing articulation, and wherever possible, take the time to try on and move around in a couple pairs once you've narrowed the search down.
On the style side, you'll see quite a bit of Marsala, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2015 and its lovely derivatives, making an outerwear appearance (and a statement at that) being paired in unexpected and eye-pleasing kit combos. Like jackets, you'll also see attention paid to skier type with features focused accordingly throughout—our guide follows suit with the following persona classifications:
Weekend Warrior—For skiers hitting their favorite ski resort(s) somewhere between 6 and upwards of 20 days per season who may or may not dabble in some hike-to/sidecountry, being comfortable & warm (but not too warm) and looking good at a reasonable price point are all priorities.
Alpine A-Lister—Sparing no expense, these jackets are as much about looking good as they are about warm, skiing performance, for a statement-making style straight off the slopes and onto the après scene.
Backcountry Skier—Optimized for serious performance during deep-powder pursuits—be it a self-propelled tour or hike-to adventure to earn turns in—but mostly out of—bounds or a descent-focused cat or heli trip where lightweight and breathable tech performance are key.
